National Vocational Qualifications or NVQs for short are work related, ability based recognised qualifications. They indicate the skills and understanding required to undertake a job in an efficient manner and show that a candidate is capable in the field of work the NVQ represents.
Based on occupational standards, NVQs have been put in place by relevant governing bodies. These standards are statements of performance that describe what capable individuals in a particular occupation are expected to be able to carry out in their work duties. They cover all the main aspects of an occupation, including the ability to adjust to future needs, best practice and the awareness and comprehension that makes for a competent and able work performance.
NVQs do not have to be finished within a particular time frame. An NVQ course can be undertaken by full-time employees or by college and school students with a work placement or part-time job that allows them to develop the necessary skillbase. There are no age limits put in place for taking NVQ training.
